316L STAINLESS STEELGrade 316L is very similar to 316 stainless steel. It is still considered a molybdenum-bearing grade and has properties that make it highly resistant to corrosive degradation. 316L grade stainless steel differs from 316 in that contain lower levels of carbon. The decreased level of carbon in this stainless steel makes this grade immune from sensitisation or grain boundary carbide precipitation. Because of this unique property, Grade 316L tends to be commonly used in heavy gauge welding situations. Additionally, the lower carbon levels make this grade easier to machine. In normal atmospheric or water based environments, Stainless Steel 316 Square Round Bars will not corrode as demonstrated by domestic sink units, cutlery, saucepans and work – surfaces. In more aggressive conditions, Stainless Steel 316L Flat Round Bars may corrode and a more highly alloyed stainless steel can be used. The chloride ion is the most common of Stainless Steel 316 Threaded Round Bars and is found in everyday materials such as salt and bleach. Pitting corrosion is avoided by making sure that Stainless Steel 316L Hollow Round Bars does not come into prolonged contact with harmful chemicals or by choosing a grade of steel which is more resistant to attack. The resistance of Stainless Steel 316 Hexagonal Round Bars can be assessed using the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number calculated from the alloy content. Stainless Steel 316L Triangular Round Bars requires a supply of oxygen to make sure that the passive layer can form on the surface. In very tight crevices, Stainless Steel 316 Round Bars is not always possible for the oxygen to gain access to the stainless-steel surface thereby causing it to be vulnerable to attack. Crevice corrosion of Stainless Steel 316L Round Bars is avoided by sealing crevices with a flexible sealant or by using a more corrosion resistant grade.

316L stainless steel is an extra-low carbon version of the 316 steel alloy. The lower carbon content in 316L minimizes deleterious carbide precipitation as a result of welding. Consequently, 316L is used when welding is required in order to ensure maximum corrosion resistance.
While similiar to Type 304, both Type 316 and 316L exhibit better corrosion resistance and are stronger and elevated temperatures. They are also both non-hardenable by heat treatment and can be readily formed and drawn.
Annealing 316 and 316L stainless steels requires heating to between 1900-2100°F (1038-1149°C) before rapidly quenching. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present. Unprotected carbon steel rusts readily when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film (the rust) is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide; and, because of the greater volume of the iron oxide, this tends to flake and fall away. Stainless steels contain sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, which prevents further surface corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal's internal structure.[3] Due to the similar size of the steel and oxide ions, they bond very strongly and remain attached to the surface.
